NOTES:
The date given is the date of burial, and not the date of death.
In England and Wales, up to 1751, the New Year always began on
the 25th March (Lady Day).
The original spelling of names (as transcribed) has been retained.
(+) after surname indicates an entry in the Wimpole
Churchyard Register.
[MI:] Additional details from Monumental Inscription.
(B.T.) indicates the entry as shown in the Bishop's Transcripts 1599-1812 where it differs from the entry in the local church register. For more details, see the original Introduction written by T.P.R. Layng in 1983 on the Parish Registers index page.]

[Here starts what must have been a terrible year in Wimpole. The register entries from February 1615 record 33 burials in 12 months, including the burial of Sir Thomas Chicheley, the Lord of the Manor, at the early age of 38. It is assumed that the cause of the deaths was a local outbreak of contagious fever, plague, or contaminated water but I have been unable to find any confirming references. Orwell appears to have escaped unscathed but Arrington, a much smaller parish, suffered 14 deaths, nine of which occurred during March, April and May. - Ed]

["August 1644, Civil War: Sheffield Castle was besieged by the Parliamentary forces of the Earl of Manchester. On August 11th, after 10 days and heavy bombardment, the castle surrendered. The generous terms of surrender allowed the Royalists to march out with all the honours of war, and without risk of imprisonment. Special provision was made for Lady Saville, the pregnant widow of the former Castle Governor. There was no midwife in attendance, but she had staunchly declared throughout the siege that she would rather die than see the Castle fall. The night after the surrender, she was carried by coach to Wentworth Woodhouse, but gave birth to her child [Talbet Savile] on the way."]
