In England and Wales, up to 1751, the new year always began on the 25th March (Lady Day). 1751 was a short year of 282 days, running from the 25th March to the 31st December. 1752 was the first year to begin on the 1st January.

Over 1000 surnames that appear in the Parish Registers for Wimpole have been Indexed Alphabetically.

(2004) These listings are based on the Church Registers for the Parish of
Wimpole, as transcribed and collated by T P R Layng in March 1983. Originally
typed by C L and A E Hatton. Additional research and indexing for this website
by Steve Odell.

(2017) I have also compared the Layng website transcript below with the commercially available Cambridgeshire Family History Society version. Any
significant differences have been so identified.

28 January 1770 YORKE The Right Honorable Charles Yorke, Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain was buried Jany 28th. (Not being buried in woollen, information was made by the undertaker, and the penalty paid)

[Burials in Woollen:Two acts of Parliament were passed in the late 17th century to protect and promote the English wool trade. The first in 1660, prohibited the use of any material other than wool for burial. The second in 1678 imposed a fine of £5 for defaulters, and introduced an affidavit which had to be signed, stating that the deceased was buried in "sheeps wooll only". These acts were not repealed until 1814. Those who could afford to, sometimes made provision in their wills for the £5 to be paid, so that they could be buried 'in linen' and not suffer the ignominy of being buried in wool. - Ed]

The misfortune happened entirely from the carelessness of the two men, who took no notice of the warning that was given them." Cambridge Chronicle and Journal, April 1777.]
