The altar-tomb of Sir Thomas Chicheley (1578-1616), Wimpole
The altar-tomb of Sir Thomas Chicheley (1578-1616).
Chicheley Chapel, St Andrew's Parish Church, Wimpole

"Here resteth in assurance to rise in Christ Sr Thomas Chicheley of Wimpole, Knight, sometimes Lord of the Towne, and patron of this Church, son of Thomas Chicheley Esq and Anne his wife, daughter of Sr John Bourne, who was Secretary to Queen Mary and of her Privie Council. The which Sr Thomas married Dorothie, one of the daughters and co-heiress of Sr Thomas Kempe of Ollanteygh in the county of Kent, Knight, by whom he was made the joyful father of six children, Dorothie, Anna, Jane, Thomas, Henry, and John. He left this life 12 Nov. in the year of Our Lord 1616, being the 38 year of his age, to whose dear memory Dorothie his wife hath piously erected this monument."

The Chicheley ([Chicheley, Chichelie, Chichely, Chichelye) family dominated Wimpole for over 250 years from 1428 when Henry Chichele, Archbishop of Canterbury and founder of All Saints College, Oxford acquired the lease of the principal Wimpole Manors. In 1436 the archbishop settled Wimpole on his great nephew, Henry Chicheley.
The Wimpole estate was sold by Sir Thomas Chicheley (1614-1698) in 1686 to meet
pressing debts.

Godparents: Richard Titon?, Flower Smithe and Isabell Rutterforthe
[Daughter of Thomas (c1578-1616) and Anon. "Jane" is probable and the entry would neatly bookend her 1632 burial [below], but it means the baptism in September 1606 was a year or so ahead of the formal June 1607 marriage between Thomas and Dorithye. Jane is stated in the notice of burial to be the daughter of Lady Dorithye but there appears to be no other evidence of birth for her in the Wimpole records. The confinement might have been away from Wimpole to keep the wedding respectable, which might explain the Rector's confusion [or discretion]. On the inscription on her father's tomb (top of page), she is moved down two places to third in the order of his children, which is a potential blurring of her early arrival. The godparents also appear a little on the low key side for the first child of a knight of the realm. Bapt Bur Mem MI]

He was the builder of Wimpole Hall. Also sold the Wimpole estate in 1686 (although his body was returned in 1699 to be interred in the family vault in Wimpole Parish Church). No godparents listed. 11 January 1656 CHICHELEY Thomas, son of Thomas Esq
[Thomas Chicheley (1656- ) son of Thomas Esq, but which Thomas? Date would be right for Thomas Chicheley (1614-1699) not yet knighted, and Anne Coventry/Lady Savile (married 1655) but their two sons are confirmed as John and Henry, and neither appears to have been born at Wimpole. Perhaps a son of a son outside the 'Wimpole' direct lineage. Needs some research. No godparents listed. Bapt ]

["August 1644: Sheffield Castle was besieged by the Parliamentary forces of the Earl of Manchester. On August 11th, after 10 days and heavy bombardment, the castle surrendered. The generous terms of surrender allowed the Royalists to march out with all the honours of war, and without risk of imprisonment. Special provision was made for Lady Saville, the pregnant widow of the former Castle Governor.
