[From left to right: Alexander Watts with his dog Jock, Alice Flora Watts standing behind Elsie Neaves (daughter of Emma), Emma Neaves (nee Watts) with Ethel Neaves on her lap, and Elizabeth Watts (nee Baker). The photograph was taken in Alexander's garden in Orwell High Street in 1913.

Photograph and family details contributed by Jean Watts.

-
Alexander Watts was born November 7 1850 in Orwell and was the second child of David Watts and Mary Ann (nee Jackson). He married Elizabeth Baker of Fowlmere at the Independent Meeting on June 15 1874 at Fowlmere. The couple had six children: Agnes (born 1875), David John (born 1876), Alfred Bertram (born 1878), Emma (born 1880), Alice Flora (born 1883) and Edith Ruth (born 1884) who died aged 11 months from whooping cough and bronchitis.

Alexander Watts was a man of many trades. He tried his hand at labouring, at market gardening, at coprolite digging and he also had a cart which he used to take his surplus produce to sell in Cambridge. He also brought goods back to Orwell for the villagers, which were delivered by hand by his wife and granddaughter Elsie Neaves. He was also a councillor on the first Orwell Parish Council which was set up on the 7 December 1894.

At the time of the 1871 census, Alexander Watts lived in Stocks Lane, by 1881 the family lived at 19 Lotfold Street [there is a mistake on the 1881 census as the family are shown but incorrectly named Parcell]. In the early 1900's Alexander rented two cottages in Orwell High Street from a Mr Collis in London and the 1915 Electoral Roll records Alexander still living in the High Street.

Alexander died on November 30 1935, aged 85 years. Alexander, Elizabeth, David John and Alice Flora are all buried in St. Andrew's Churchyard, Orwell.]
